Vinegar as a Household Cleaner: Is it Safe?

People who love DIY home remedies know that vinegar or apple cider vinegar is a popular cleaning agent. It’s natural, effective and it can remove stains that are sometimes impossible to remove by commercial cleaning agents.

When it comes to its use, there’s no denying that vinegar is in fact a great cleaning agent. But why is it so effective anyway? It’s because vinegar has intrinsic acidic properties that can get rid of stains by burning them at a microscopic level. That might sound scary but it’s actually pretty safe. Vinegar contains acetic acid which is one of the safest acids in the world. Nonetheless, it’s still an acid and it doesn’t work without some minor side effects.

pH levels

Every living substance in the world has a particular optimum pH level. This pH level is an acid-base ratio. The lower the pH, the more acidic the substance is. The optimum pH decides how much acidity is needed to keep the substance functioning. Some organic matter functions only in basic conditions. These could include plants. An acid, although weak, like vinegar can deteriorate plant cells and damage them.

Health Safety

Unlike strong acids, vinegar isn’t a particular health hazard. That’s why it’s consumed everywhere around the world. It can, however, cause skin irritation if it is spilled on your hand during your housecleaning project. People with sensitive skin are more vulnerable to a vinegar stinging effect.

Cons as a Housecleaner

We all know vinegar can remove those dirty, grime stains from sinks and wash basins. Vinegar can also be used to remove coffee or tea stains as well as the stain of a pet’s accident. But not every homeowner prefers to use vinegar for cleaning things around their house.

Vinegar has a pungent smell that isn’t very well received by many people. Its smell is one of the main reasons why homeowners have an aversion to it.

The Verdict

As a cleaning agent, vinegar is a pretty safe option when used in appropriate quantities. Just be careful of not spilling it on your skin!
